STIR/SHAKEN Compliance and JustCall

Businesses must adhere to industry standards and compliance regulations.

Compliance not only ensures the security and integrity of your communications but also builds trust with your customers.

One such compliance is STIR/SHAKEN.

What is STIR/SHAKEN Compliance?

Have you ever answered a phone call from what appears to be a familiar number, only to find out it was a robocall or scammer using a fake caller ID?

We’ve all been there!

To combat this issue, new FCC rules were implemented on June 30, 2021 (as part of the TRACED Act), requiring technical standards and protocols for authenticating caller ID information.

This is where STIR/SHAKEN comes in.

STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) and SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) are industry-standard protocols aimed at combating the rise of robocalls and call spoofing.

Call spoofing is a tactic employed by scammers to hide their true identity, often using a fake caller ID to appear as a legitimate entity.

STIR/SHAKEN compliance involves the use of digital certificates to authenticate the origin of a call. This authentication process enables service providers to attest to the source of incoming calls and authenticate those signatures to let the call recipient know when a call has been verified.

There are three levels of attestation: A-level, B-level, and C-level.

  • A-level attestation is the most trusted. The service provider verifies both the origination of the call and that the user/extension number is authorized to use the number.
  • B-level attestation indicates that the service provider has authenticated the call origination but cannot verify the caller’s authorization to use the number.
  • C-level attestation means that the service provider originated the call on the network but cannot authenticate the call source.

The authentication process helps ensure that the caller ID information displayed is accurate and trustworthy.

By implementing STIR/SHAKEN, businesses can significantly reduce the chances of their numbers being marked as spam or fraudulent.

Note: The STIR/SHAKEN framework is mandatory for all communication providers in the US.

The Importance of STIR/SHAKEN Compliance

There are several reasons why STIR/SHAKEN compliance is crucial for businesses:

  • Enhancing Customer Trust: When your calls are authenticated and marked as verified, it assures customers that they are communicating with a legitimate entity, strengthening their trust in your business.
  • Reducing Spam and Fraud: By implementing STIR/SHAKEN, you can minimize the chances of your calls being marked as spam, ensuring that your important communications reach your customers and leads without any hindrance.
  • Meeting Regulatory Requirements: STIR/SHAKEN is mandated for use by all communication providers in the US, making it a necessary compliance for businesses operating in the country.

Benefits of STIR/SHAKEN Compliance

Implementing STIR/SHAKEN compliance comes with several benefits for your business:

  • Improved Call Delivery: Verified and authenticated calls are more likely to be answered by customers, increasing the chances of successful communication and positive outcomes.
  • Enhanced Reputation: By complying with STIR/SHAKEN, your business demonstrates its commitment to protecting customers from fraudulent activities and maintaining high communication standards, improving your overall reputation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meeting STIR/SHAKEN requirements ensure that your business is in line with the necessary regulatory standards, reducing the risk of potential fines or penalties.
