How To Keep a Positive Mindset While Working From Home

When your work environment changes, it can also affect your mindset and personal well-being especially working from home.

We are well into the largest ‘work from home’ experiment that has ever been done. With most companies now having at least part of their workforce working remotely, we have learned a lot about how it affects productivity, morale, overall satisfaction, finances, and many other areas.

Many people now believe that remote work will be utilized much more even as we move beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, as the business world stabilizes. With that being said, how do you ensure that you are staying positive and that working from home is a good thing? Also, how do you stay active if you are staying home every day instead of commuting?

Staying Positive and Active

First and foremost, you need to make sure that you keep a positive mindset and don’t get into a “slump.” Seeing the same thing day after day and dealing with the stress of home life and work without much change can wear a person down. Sometimes you have to be a bit creative to keep fresh energy around.

Staying active is another crucial concept for remote workers. It is healthy and productive to take walks in your neighborhood or exercise to clear the head and get the blood circulation going. Because you have removed the physical activity of commuting to work and the movement of working in an office, you need to add movement into your daily routine. Again, you sometimes have to be creative.

Take Breaks and Move

One suggestion and a common theme amongst remote workers is to take regularly scheduled breaks. Breaking your concentration and getting out of your ‘office’ allows you to calm your mind and add some variety to your day. You can use these breaks to check on the kids, walk the dog, or step outside for some fresh air.

Some people like to set a reminder to get up and take a break once every hour. For others, it could be more or less, depending on your specific type of work. Don’t be afraid to separate yourself from your ‘work mind completely.’ When you return, you will be refreshed and ready to get things done.

Clean, Define and Prepare Your Work Area

Create your own workspace that is conducive to concentrating on your work and is also comfortable, warm, and easy to navigate in.

A significant recommendation is to clean, define, and prepare your work area. Whether you are working in a home office or working from a makeshift workspace, it must be the same daily. It should be clean and organized, which minimizes distractions and gives you room to move around.

If you are not working in a home office, make sure your workspace is set up the way you want it. Having things handy and organized goes a long way in reducing the stress that can affect your attitude. Having defined boundaries also helps others in the home understand your work area and can reduce interruptions.

Maintain a healthy work-life balance

Most people have heard the phrase, “Don’t take your work home with you.” While it is undoubtedly good advice for some professions, it can be challenging when you are working from home.

It is crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance as a remote worker. When the line between work and home becomes blurred, stress begins to cross between the two, which can lead to problems with focus, productivity, and relationships at home and the office. By scheduling times throughout the day to address concerns at home and maintaining a fixed schedule, you can avoid unnecessary conflicts.

It is also essential to be able to ‘turn work off.’ It can be tempting to do one quick task or reply to an email quickly since you are basically still at work. However, this type of bleed trough is what you want to avoid. When it is family time, you should make sure that work waits until your next scheduled work hours.

Healthy Snacks and Meals

Eating well is always essential for your health, but it becomes even more important when working remotely. When working from home, it’s much easier to grab a snack or to make something to eat quickly. The issue is that often trends towards junk food since it is faster to grab or to prepare than healthier options.

Meal prep and planning are the best ways to make sure you keep the healthy options handy.  Cutting up fruits and vegetables ahead of time and pre portioning them into serving size containers means you can quickly grab one from the fridge. Having meals prepped ahead of time allows you to quickly get dinner cooked so that you have time to relax and spend time with your family.
