SIP Trunk Pricing Guide: Rate Comparisons & Cost Reduction Tips

sip trunk pricing rates cost comparison

There are several reasons why as a tech leader you’d use SIP trunking across your global contact centers. But, the biggest advantage of all is cost control over your international call rates.

When you span into new markets, you’re likely using several carriers to connect your phone services. SIP trunking lowers monthly costs through centralized billing, no hardware maintenance, no PRI lines, and eliminates long-distance call charges.

SIP trunking is a simple and fast way to lower your telecommunication Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Below are the fundamentals of SIP trunk pricing to get you started.

How Much Do SIP Trunks Cost?

The pricing for SIP trunks comes in many different forms depending on the provider– several factors make up the total cost. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be charged for every item since SIP trunk providers have their own service and cost models.

Below are some general ways to price SIP trunking

Per Trunk

Expect to pay between $20 and $65 USD per trunk for SIP plans. While a large variance in price, each SIP trunk contains about 100 channels (or lines).

Think about the number of concurrent calls your customer service teams make on a phone number. This will help to determine how many SIP trunks are required for your global contact center voice infrastructure.

Per Channel

SIP channel pricing can range from $15 to $40 USD, though many providers have SIP trunks with channels already included. Depending on your needs, you may have to purchase additional lines as needed.

Metered vs. Unmetered Plans

SIP trunk plans are usually billed in a metered or unmetered model.

  • Metered identifies as pay-as-you-go or usage-based billing.
  • Unmetered refers to “unlimited minutes,” which is telephony talk for 3,000-3,600 minutes for a flat rate as part of a Fair Use Policy.

Whichever one you choose, SIP trunk plans should be scalable and flexible to your business needs.

Virtual Phone Numbers

You’ll need a virtual phone number to use SIP trunking. Below are the ones most often used for global business:

You’ll see plans with the service to purchase or port your number outright, or the less popular option of renting your number on a per-month basis. Some call plans include a virtual phone number. Be prepared to spend anywhere between $7 and $60 USD based on the country and your SIP trunk provider.

Setup Costs

Many VoIP vendors charge a setup fee for SIP services. The costs typically range from $50 to $300 USD and include consultation, implementation and onboarding, and Quality of Service (QoS) testing.

Other Fees

Of course, you may see general taxes and service charges come through on your invoice. Other fees you might encounter from SIP trunk providers include:

  • Bursting fee to temporarily allow more channels in your trunk during high call volume.
  • Call forwarding fee to forward calls to an alternative number, device, extension, or voicemail.
  • Load balancing fee to distribute call traffic across servers.
  • DNIS/ANI fee for providing the call recipient more context over the original-dialed number (DNIS) and recognizing the number of the customer calling (ANI).

Enterprise SIP Strategies to Lower Monthly Costs

No, you don’t need to rip and replace the voice environment you currently have. SIP trunking helps enhance it through cloud-based technology.

These are the primary strategies you can use to reduce costs for your global enterprise…

  • Audit Monthly Invoice. You can ensure cost-efficient billing by routinely auditing your telephony invoice. Check to see that the discounts and credits you’re owed have been applied, and service/usage charges have been assigned to the appropriate billing groups across your contact center regions.
  • Optimize SIP Trunk Plans. Frequent telephony plans and usage surveys can help deter rogue spending across your contact center. Make sure the plans and call features you pay for match up with your actual usage. If they don’t, your provider should help you scale so you’re only paying for what you use.
  • Consolidate Carriers. Negotiation of business terms and rates is especially important for enterprises with multiple carrier partnerships to manage. Re-optimizing your carrier agreements and consolidating them into one invoice is a great way to control costs and reduce billing frustration.
