As the number of cyberattacks has been rapidly growing in the past few years – especially since the beginning of the pandemic, with a noted increase by scamming 400% – cybersecurity has become a topic on the lips of many. Cybersecurity itself stands for a set of strategies and techniques used to protect internet-based networks, systems, and data from any breaches and harmful interruptions. With the market already surpassing $156.24 billion and forecasted to reach $170.4 billion by the beginning of next year, more and more companies providing a wide range of cybersecurity solutions have been appearing. What are the top cybersecurity companies out there?

1. Who are the biggest cybersecurity companies?

One of the most well-known cybersecurity companies on the market, McAfee has been producing web applications since 1987. Through its McAfee Global Threat Intelligence, the company offers endpoint protection and efficient mobile application security used by international business, governments, as well as home users.

This multinational cybersecurity organization notes over 54,000 satisfied customers from 150 countries. Mostly used in finance and healthcare, Palo Alto’s advanced firewalls and cloud-based security products are used by 85% of Fortune 100 companies.

Being the first cloud-based endpoint security service, CrowdStrike is a proud pioneer in cybersecurity within the energy sector. Its services are used by 12 of the Fortune 20 largest global firms.

Continuously highly rated by analysts, IBM offers some of the most innovative cybersecurity solutions out there. Apart from their core services such as information management, orchestration, and cloud security, the cybersecurity company has also recently implemented an incident response platform and started using artificial intelligence with it’s cloud-focused solutions.

Amongst many varied services Microsoft is known for, the tech organization also offers cybersecurity solutions ranging from identity and access management, information protection, cloud security, to name a few, that can be applied to all their managed services.

2. Public cybersecurity companies to know

The cybersecurity company has a multi-level security architecture that protects information stored by businesses and governments within the cloud, on mobile devices and across many different networks.

An expert in threat analysis and prediction, Rapid7 helps companies work on their network vulnerabilities and catch suspicious cyber activity in its early stages before they can escalate and pose a greater threat.

Apart from its endpoint security specialization, the Carbon Black Predictive Security Cloud analyzes the behavior of hackers circulating around the industry in order to create a successful cyber threat strategy.

Mimecast specializes in emails and cyberattacks that revolve around them. Their threat protection features help fight malicious URLs, impersonation, phishing, and malware.

McAfee and Palo Alto Networks have also gone public in the past few years.

3. Computer security vs. cybersecurity companies: which do you need?

Although sometimes used interchangeably, computer security companies and cybersecurity companies offer different security solutions, thus are directed to different audiences. How can we differentiate the two?

Companies taking care of computer security, also called physical security, offer services related to solely protecting hardware from unauthorized access. They hold a machine-focused approach and aims to keep tech equipment updated and properly patched through implementing different security measures, for instance:

  • passwords
  • encryption
  • firewalls
  • disabled localization
  • 2FA (two-factor authentication)
  • penetration testing
  • installing the latest software and hardware updates
  • backing up data
  • using secure WPA or WPA2 connection

Cybersecurity companies, on the other hand, deal not only with individual computers but also the information it stores and the network it belongs to. Companies as such aim to protect all the external and internal business data, such as customer documentation, incident reports, market research, and corporate knowledge base, from cyber threats. Cybersecurity solutions also tackle safe cross-organizational communication between all relevant hardware, such as mobile devices, printers, scanners, projectors, etc.

Furthermore, to evaluate which security company would be most suitable for you and your business, you need to track any potential security threats your company could face – and whether they are more physical or directed towards your cloud-based servers.

3. What cybersecurity companies have been hacked?

Cybercrime is on the rise to such an extent that damage it causes is predicted to reach as high as $6 trillion per annum by the end of the year. Knowing this, it thus comes as no surprise that an average of $75 billion is spent on cybersecurity services worldwide every year. Yet although cybersecurity companies are usually efficient and effective in protecting from all sorts of cyberattacks, there have been instances where hackers managed to reach even their servers and the secure data stored within them.

The first time an influential cybersecurity company was hacked happened in March 2011, when a US-based multi-factor authentication company called RSA experienced two successful spear-phishing attacks. By impersonating RSA through customized interpersonal practices such as emails, voice calls, and text messages, hackers managed to compromise the company’s clientele, as well as their trusted data. Overall, the RSA cyber attack cost $66 million and became a major national security issue.

In December 2019 Microsoft announced that one of their internal customer databases storing unprotected user analytics was accidentally exposed online. One of the biggest data  breaches rather than a cyberattack, this situation caused an exposure of about 250 million data entries, with information such as email addresses, IP addresses, and particular details about support cases.

Not long after the Microsoft incident, FireEye, one of the largest US cybersecurity companies, was hacked in December 2020. The identified foreign government hackers stole company’s tools used to test and access defenses protecting their customers’ stored data – amongst them global corporations and governments on the local, state, and federal levels.

3. Conclusion

Recent findings show that on average only sheer 5% of companies’ folders are properly protected. Don’t fall into such a trap and make cybersecurity the focal point of your business. If you want to achieve utmost enterprise security, you need to define potential cyber dangers your company might be facing and choose the best security company offering the most optimal threat detection measures put in place. This is the best recipe for leading a hassle-free, successful business.
